Types of Digital Hearing Aid

Hearing Aid Types

Everyone’s hearing difficulties are different, which is why you need an individual assessment so that the correct digital hearing aid can be prescribed especially for you.

However, in terms of the type of fitting, this is very much down to your own personal preferences in terms of appearance, or what feels most comfortable.

The most popular hearing aid types fall into two main categories: those with custom-made fittings and those manufactured for "instant-fit".

Custom-made digital hearing aids

Custom-made digital hearing aids are those that involve taking a mould of the ear canal – and then having a hearing aid shell specially manufactured.

These include Completely in the Canal fittings (CIC); In the Ear (ITE); In the Canal (ITC); Half Shell and Full Shell. This is where the expertise of the hearing aid audiologist comes in to ensure that the correct fitting is recommended according to your individual requirements.

This choice is based on the varying effectiveness of one fitting type versus another, together with which style you feel is most comfortable and cosmetically acceptable.

Instant-Fit digital hearing aids

Instant-fit digital hearing aids

The Instant-Fit digital hearing aid can theoretically be fitted on the day of the hearing test, from the diagnosis and prescription generated for your individual hearing loss and type.

The basic type or name given to this fitting is "behind the ear" (BTE) – because the main device fits neatly – and to some extent invisibly – over the top of the ear.

Recent developments of this type of digital hearing aid have resulted in variants on this basic design in order to introduce later technology. Notably, these have included receiver in the canal (RIC) models or canal receiver technology (CRT) and RITE fittings "right in the ear".

Again, cosmetic preferences - where the hearing aid is available in a variety of different colours – as well as mini and micro versions leading to even smaller and lighter hearing aids, are very much design features in more recent models.
